Our Belted Galloways

We originally fell in love with Belted Galloways because they look like the famous, 'Cookies N' Creme', but after further research settled with them because they are hands-down the most resilient, practical breed for a small farm In our humble opinion that is). Coming out of the harsh Scottish Highlands, these cattle are built to work. For us, they’ve been the ultimate triple-purpose animal, and they fit into our daily homestead rhythm perfectly.

If you are thinking about adding cattle to your land, here is why we chose the Belties:

  • The beef is incredible—and cheap to raise. Because they have a thick, double-layer hair coat instead of a heavy layer of back fat, they stay warm without needing a ton of grain. They produce beautifully marbled, lean beef entirely on grass.
  • They make great family milk cows. They have fantastic maternal instincts and give rich, high-quality milk. It’s the perfect amount for a homestead dairy setup without overwhelming your fridge.
  • The hides are a massive bonus. You hate to waste any part of the animal, and their iconic black-and-white or dun coats make the most beautiful, thick rugs and winter hides.
  • They do the heavy lifting on pasture management. Our Belties are incredibly gentle and act like four-legged brush hogs. They will happily clear out thick brush and stubborn weeds that other cattle won't touch, all without tearing up the topsoil.
